Advent reminds us of the radical paradoxes of the Christian story that confront – and often offend – our rational minds. The perfect union of God and Human that reveals the whole meaning for Creation. The unimaginable self-emptying of God that gave birth to the Child of Bethlehem and the unique person of Jesus of Nazareth. What Jesus names as the first beatitude – poverty of spirit – is the key into this new order of reality. In our Advent retreat we will be considering these paradoxes as insights which are part of our experience rather than just high-octane ideas. Poverty of spirit is where ‘concrete existence meets infinite mystery’ (Johannes Metz). Our practice of meditation immerses us in this cosmic paradox each day of our lives.
During the retreat the Bonnevaux daily rhythm of prayer and ordinary living will shape our sharing together in reflection on this mystery in our lives.

This event takes place at Bonnevaux and offers an opportunity to discover the rich cultural and historical French and European heritage of the 12th-century Abbaye de Bonnevaux, as well as to explore the varied and natural beauty of the land which we cultivate as a model of ecological responsibility.
Bonnevaux (Bonne Vallée , or Good Valley) is set within a beautiful valley formed by the river Rhune (la Rhûne) which descends past the Chapel and the 12th-century Abbaye, emptying into the lake beyond. The beauty and peace of Bonnevaux´s 65 hectares (160 acres) reflects the contemplative life lived here from its foundation as a Benedictine monastery in 1119 until the French Revolution. The community is continuing this policy as a living witness to the link between ecology and the human spirit. The land has over 20 different plant habitats, some of which are of heritage value.
