This retreat will help those who are beginning the journey of meditation to feel their way into a path that is unpredictable and full of wonder, peace and challenges to grow. Being with others in community is an ideal opportunity to see how this journey is both uniquely personal and a discovery of the sort of community we may never have imagined we could feel we belong to.
The life-changing gift of meditation is ever-new. I mean by this that we don’t have to look for novelty or get bored with what we have started, because we are always going deeper. With growing confidence, we feel our way forward as we let go of ego-control. We are feeling our way, led ever deeper into the ever-present origin. This retreat experience will help to adjust to this new way of living and learning by integrating our growth in contemplative awareness in daily life:
- seeing everything differently by seeing it as it is
- putting the ego in its rightful place and being who we truly are
- responding to change with acceptance not denial
- understanding what ‘all will be well’ really means and
- the glorious liberty of dissolving all traces of fear and resentment in pure love
The quiet flow of simple living at Bonnevaux, meditating together, the energy of peace in this ‘good valley’ where contemplation has been practiced for more than a thousand years, a balance of silence, times for reflection and interaction with fellow-pilgrims. These are among the good reasons for coming in person to a a time which will help you better feel the way ahead.

Before coming on this retreat in Bonnevaux, it is recommended, though it’s not essential, to listen to the 4-Part Introduction to Meditation.
This event takes place at Bonnevaux and offers an opportunity to discover the rich cultural and historical French and European heritage of the 12th-century Abbaye de Bonnevaux, as well as to explore the varied and natural beauty of the land which we cultivate as a model of ecological responsibility.
Bonnevaux (Bonne Vallée , or Good Valley) is set within a beautiful valley formed by the river Rhune (la Rhûne) which descends past the Chapel and the 12th-century Abbaye, emptying into the lake beyond. The beauty and peace of Bonnevaux´s 65 hectares (160 acres) reflects the contemplative life lived here from its foundation as a Benedictine monastery in 1119 until the French Revolution. The community is continuing this policy as a living witness to the link between ecology and the human spirit. The land has over 20 different plant habitats, some of which are of heritage value.
